An undertrial prisoner allegedly escaped from the premises of Judicial Magistrate's Court at Kodala, about 50-km from here today, police said.

Manoj Sahu, an inmate of Kodala sub-jail in Ganjam district, was arrested in several ATM loot cases about a year ago.

He was taken out of the jail to appear in the court for trial of his case. Sahu of Khandara village was behind bars for about a year.

Sources said he escaped on the plea of going to the toilet in the court premises. At least two constables were guarding Sahu.

"We are waiting for detailed reports from the constables who attended him" said sub divisional police officer, Chhatrapur A.Ch Pahi.

Meanwhile, police intensified patrolling in the area to re-arrest the person, he said.
