The attempt of an undertrial was foiled today after he was shot at his leg while trying to escape from the court premises here, police said.

"The incident happened at around 11:15 AM when Chettri and 27 other undertrial prisoners were brought to Chief Judicial Magistrate court for production," Superintendent of Police (City) East Khasi Hills district Vivek Syiem said.

He said the 39-year-old criminal escaped from the clutches of the armed escorts while alighting from the police van after which he ran towards Raj Bhavan Road leading to the All India Radio station.

While two armed guards chased him, Chettri grabbed a big stone and attempted to attack at the police after which around 10 bullets were fired in the air to prevent his attack.

The armed guards shot him on his left leg and he was later admitted to Shillong Civil Hospital, Syiem said.

Chettri has been in jail custody since December last year after he was arrested for committing theft. He was also wanted in a burglary case in October the same year and in 2009 he was booked for robbery.
