The head of the UN agency tasked with defending press freedom has condemned the murder of a bureau chief of a domestic daily in Gujarat, saying crimes targeting journalists undermine their ability to carry out their work.

"I condemn the murder of Kishore Dave," Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Irina Bokova, said in a statement, referring to Jai Hind newspaper's bureau chief in Junagadh in Gujarat.

Three people have been arrested in connection with the murder of Dave, who was stabbed to death in his office on August 22.

"I trust that legal proceedings already underway will shed full light on this crime, which undermines journalists' ability to carry out their work and contribute to open and informed public debate," Bokova said.
