Ahead of state assembly polls, BJP candidate from Kulgam assembly segment has claimed that he was attacked by militants near his house in south Kashmir but escaped unhurt.

Ghulam Hassan Zargar, BJP candidate from Kulgam, claimed that pistol-borne militants fired two shots at him last night when he had just reached home at Bogund in Kulgam district from Srinagar, police said.

Zargar told police he managed to save himself after the militants missed their target.

A police spokesman said the matter is being investigated.

Meanwhile, security forces opened fire after hearing firecracker bursts near an election rally of Congress candidate from Homshalibugh, the police spokesman said.

"Some kind of sound, appearing to be gunshots, was heard from nearby orchards. Suspecting it to be adverse fire, some security personnel fired shots in air," the spokesman said.

He said a police team was sent to ascertain the cause of initial burst, which turned out to be firecrackers going off at two wedding functions in the vicinity.
