Union Commerce Minister meets tobacco farmers

Central and state governments are keen to solve tobacco farmers's problems Union Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitaraman said here today when she was on a tour of Prakasam district.

She visited tobacco auction platforms in Ongole and Kandukur as well as consoled family members of farmers who committed suicide.

She told farmers that the prime minister is also very keen to solve problems of tobacco farmers' problems.

She said that a solution would be found after a meeting with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu in Vijayawada.

Sitaraman faced protests by tobacco farmers wherever she went.

In Ongole, tobacco farmers demanded announcement of prices for low grade tobacco, while in Ponduru, villagers protested in front of her car and demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation to family members of farmers who committed suicide.
