Union Minister for Tourism, KJ Alphons, paid a visit to the family of slain NCP candidate Jonathone N Sangma, at their residence in Williamnagar town to check on the family as well as convey his condolences.

Alphons was joined in his visit by the BJP MLA from Bokajan and state BJP president, Shibun Lyngdoh.

The yesterday's visit came after the gruesome death of Sangma along with three more people in an IED blast triggered while they were returning from Sawilgre across the Simsang river by suspected militants of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA).

The minister assured the family of all support while also assuring them of quick action against those responsible for the murder of the MLA aspirant.

The minister later last evening was also a part of the candle light vigil held in remembrance of late Jonathone Sangma in the town of Tura, where he also paid his homage.

Alphons, who is Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Tourism, is also in-charge of BJP for Meghalaya.

Earlier, the Williamnagar BJP office, which held an emergency meeting at its offices condemned the gruesome murder of Jonathone and sought the strongest punishment against those responsible. The BJP also held the state government responsible for its failure to protect the lives of the four murder victims.

We are in extreme shock at what happened. It was also a personal loss as the late leader was the brother in law of the BJP candidate from Williamnagar, Santosh R Marak, said a release by the BJP.
