Major trade unions on Saturday warned the Centre of a state-wide agitation if the National Textile Corporation (NTC) mills were privatised or if its land was sold for other use.
At a meeting of representatives of over 10 unions, including Centre of Indian Trade Unions, it was alleged that the Centre was trying to sell the land belonging to the NTC for other purpose and also to private agencies, like the recent sale of a mill in Mumbai for Rs 1,400 crore to construct a memorial of Ambedkar.
The government was claiming there was no money to run the mills, which were running on loss, the meeting was told, AITUC sources said.
The unions wanted the government to spend the money received out of selling the property for the benefit of the workers and modernise the mills.
Similarly, the government was trying to privatise the mills.
The issue would be taken to the notice of the MPs elected from the state for raising the matter in Parliament and to meet Prime Minister and Finance Minister.
If the Centre failed to resolve the problem, the unions would resort to a state-wide agitation against it, the meeting participated by leaders of AITUC, CITU, HMS, ATP, MLF, LPF and INTUC, was told.
