A senior IAS officer here has been cheated by an unknown person who managed to withdraw Rs 2.73 lakh from the officer's bank account.

The accused called up the Additional Chief Secretary of the Public Health and Engineering J C Mohanty yesterday and introduced himself as an official of SBBJ bank, which has merged with SBI.

The unidentified caller told the IAS officer that since the SBBJ bank has merged with SBI, some formalities needed to be completed therefore he (the caller) needed an OTP (one time password) received at his (Mohanty's) mobile phone, DCP South Manish Agrawal said today.

Mohanty shared the OTP with the caller and moments later, he received an SMS from the bank that Rs 2.73 lakh have been debited, the DCP said.

The officer then lodged an FIR and the matter is being investigated, the DCP added.
