The Dakshina Kannada district administration has directed the commissioner of the Mangalore City Corporation and officials of other local bodies to close all unproductive bore wells within 10 days.

The direction is in the wake of the death of four-year-old Akshata who fell into an open borewell at Nagathana village in Bijapur on Tuesday. Her body was pulled out from the borwell on Thursday after 50-hour long operation.

Deputy Commissioner AB Ibrahim said the local bodies have to identify open and dry borewells in three days and ensure their closure in 10 days.
