UP cabinet approves 50 per cent hike in pension of Loktantra Senanis

Uttar Pradesh cabinet today approved a 50 per cent hike in the pension given to those who were imprisoned during the Emergency as political prisoners.

Loktantra Senanis, people who were put behind bars by Indira Gandhi regime for resisting the Emergency during the 21-month period in 1975-77, are currently given Rs 10,000 as pension.

The decision to increase the pension was taken in a cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. The government order will be effective from April 1, 2016 or its date of issuance, which ever is later, a government spokesman said.

The cabinet aslo decided to include 29 Sanskrit secondary schools and degree colleges in the list of institutions eligible for grants, he said.
