The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approved the provision for giving the death penalty in an attempt to act tough on illicit liquor manufacturers, a senior UP minister told PTI.

He said existing provisions of the 1910 Excise Law have been strengthened and additions made as per the "current situation".

"To stop the wrong practice of manufacturing of spurious liquor, provisions of life imprisonment and death penalty have been incorporated. There is a provision of death penalty depending upon the intensity of the case (death by spurious liquor)," the minister said.
