The Uttar Pradesh chief secretary today directed officials to initiate action against 104 surgeons for allegedly "not performing" any major operation.

"Clarification should be immediately sought from the 104 government surgeons who have not performed any major operation and departmental action be ensured against them," Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan said.

Speaking at the review meeting of medical health and family planning departments here, the chief secretary also instructed officials to ensure availability of medicines and doctors in government hospitals for the benefit of common people.

"Senior officials, both at the state headquarter and district level, should regularly monitor the availability of medicines as well as that of doctors in the hospitals under them," he said.

Ranjan also underlined the need for redressing the problems arising in distribution of cheques under the 'Janani Suraksha Yojna' on a priority basis.

He also called for improvement of the system for providing free food to the beneficiaries of this scheme and said the assistance of self-help groups could be taken for it.
