Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan, who is to retire this month, has been given three months' extension by the Centre following a recommendation by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

"Upon the CM's recommendation, Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan's tenure is extended for three months," the Chief Minister's Office said this evening confirming the extension of the tenure of the Chief Secretary retiring on Mar 31.

Akhilesh had last week approved a proposal for Ranjan's extension and a recommendation for the same was sent to the Centre.

Ranjan, a 1978-batch IAS officer, had taken over as the chief secretary on May 31, 2014, after his predecessor Jawed Usmani was removed a few days after the ruling Samajwadi Party's poor showing in the Lok Sabha elections. His tenure has been free from any major controversy.
