The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council today passed the motion of thanks to the Governor's address by a voice vote, amidst a walkout by the main opposition Samajwadi Party.

Speaking on the motion during the Zero Hour, leader of the House Dinesh Sharma said: "The government has worked towards improving all sectors, including health, power, law and order."

Claiming that crime has come down during the present government, Sharma said the Uttar Pradesh Control of Organised Crimes (UPCOC) Bill is for the criminals and not for the opposition parties.

"This government believes in justice to all and not on the appeasement policy...It is based on 'sabka saath sabka vikas'," the deputy chief minister said.

Earlier, leader of opposition Ahmed Hasan said there is a spurt in crime incidents in the state, terming it as "Crime Pradesh".

The aim of the UPCOC Bill is to counter political adversaries, the SP MLC alleged.

Dinesh Singh (Congress), Shatrudra Prakash (Samajwadi Party) and Sunil Singh Chittor (BSP) were among others who spoke during the discussion.

While the SP members staged a walkout against the motion, the House passed it by a voice vote. The House was later adjourned till March 5.
