Uttar Pradesh DGP Javeed Ahmad today asked police personnel in the state to remain cautious of their behaviour saying they are under "scanner of the common man".

"Many times, the electronic media shows policemen dancing in uniform, lying in an inebriated state at public places, misbehaving with women, children and elderly persons, using indecent language or accepting bribe. You should think what image these acts present of the force," he said in a message.

"Right now, the common man is also the media. Everyone has smartphones and we are under their scanner. We have to decide how we want to project ourselves -- as a hero or as characters of the incidents mentioned above," the DGP said.

Ahmad also appreciated the police force for its work while advising it to practice caution when in the public eye.

"Our professional and personal lives are inter-releated and there is a need to strike a balance between the two. All our acts are being watched and as we remain in uniform, it appears big," he said, adding that the "good work" many times get "sacrificed" due to the "bad" behaviour.
