Several employees abstained from work and staged protest meetings across the state during the strike called by Sarvjan Hitai Sanrakshan Samiti, an association of government employee.

The Samiti said the strike will continue tomorrow and protest meetings will be held before the Vidhan Sabha here and at the district-level, against the tabelling of the bill in the Rajya Sabha.

Protesting the bill, the outfit said the reservation in promotions would not only disturb the basic structure of the Constitution, but would also encroach upon the right to equality.

"Luring voters in the name of reservation in promotion is harming social harmony and is not in the national interest," the Samiti's president Shailendra Dubey said.

"There have been four attempts in the past and this is the fifth one to amend the Constitution, and the three crore employees of the country would not tolerate it," he added.
