The Uttar Pradesh government, on the recommendation of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has paid Rs three lakh each to the next of kin of four children who were electrocuted when a high tension wire fell in a canal where they were bathing, officials said today.
The incident took place at Salempur village in UP's Saharanpur district on May 23, 2010.
Three officials -- a sub-divisional officer, assistant engineer and a lineman -- were found prima-facie guilty of the carelessness and were suspended.
Initially, the UP government paid Rs one lakh each as monetary relief to the families of the four deceased but NHRC asked the authorities concerned to increase the amount to Rs three lakh each, according to an NHRC statement released today.
