The Uttar Pradesh government has directed the district magistrates to issue unique identification numbers to arms license holders of the state before September 1.

Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Avinash Singh today informed about the state government's orders asking the firearm holders to take the unique identification numbers before September 1 from concerned arms offices to avoid cancellation of license and seizure of arms by the police.

The move comes in the wake of people holding more than one licensed firearm and in many instances, the licenses being acquired from other districts, Singh said.

To address such problems, a decision was taken by the state government to create a database of arms license holders, he said.

As many as 44,000 people hold arms license in Kanpur, but data of only 20,000 such holders is available, Singh said, adding that unique numbers are being allotted to the remaining license holders.

With an updated database available on internet, firearm license can be renewed easily and the license holders need not get their verifications done several times, the ADM added.
