Atrocities against women will not be tolerated and the state government was working for their safety and empowerment, Uttar Pradesh State Women Commission member Ashok Pandey said here today.

Pandey said she had been visiting the districts and paying utmost priority to address problems faced by women.

Emphasising that stern action would be taken against those who mete out ill-treatment toward women, she said, "complaints of harassment by women would be addressed within 10 days and all problems will be solved at the earliest."

Police should take strict action against those who torture and harass women, she said, adding quick justice should be delivered in such cases.

Pandey said the government had launched several programmes for the benefit of women. "The government would provide rupees 11,000 to widows for remarriage," she added.

She said the Commission was also taking several steps to stop harassment of women over dowry and other issues.
