The Governor yesterday gave his assent on the Uttar Pradesh Lokayukta and deputy Lokayukta (Amendment) Act 2012 bill, already been passed by the state assembly during budget session, officials said here today.
With the Governor's assent, the tenure of the state Lokayukta and its deputy has been extended to eight years from the date of assuming the office. Besides, the Lokayukta can now impose a fine of up to Rs 50,000 in case a false complaint is lodged against any public servant.
As per the amendment, Lokayukta and its deputy would continue in the post till the time new appointment is made.
The bill was passed by the state Assembly on June 18 and was sent to the Legislative Council.
However, the upper house sent back the bill to the assembly with suggestion of fixing the term of Lokayukta and its deputy for a period of five years.
The bill was again presented in the lower house where suggestion of the council was rejected and it was sent to the Governor for his assent.
