Jewellers in the state today observed a strike by closing their showrooms in protest against the Centre's decision to make PAN card compulsory for purchases above Rs 1 lakh.

Regional Director, Gems and Jewellery Federation Rajan Rastogi said UP Jewellers association associated with the Federation observed the strike by closing the showrooms.

He said in the Union budget, PAN has been made compulsory for purchases above Rs 1 lakh while earlier it was mandatory for purchases over Rs 5 lakh.

He said the decision has affected their business and added, "A large number of women who buy jewellery lie in this segment and they have no PAN. Centre should first ensure PAN card for everyone before making such arrangement," he said.

He said if their demands were not met, a country-wide agitation would be initiated.
