Proceedings in Uttar Pradesh legislature were washed out today with Congress members holding both Houses to ransom and forcing repeated adjournments over demand for judicial probe into police lathi charge on party workers.

It was for the second successive day that the Assembly and the Council witnessed bedlam. BJP had yesterday stalled the proceedings demanding a discussion on the law and order situation in the state.

As soon as the Assembly met for the day this morning, Congress members with black bands tied on their hand and placards reading "police ke dam par ye sarkar nahi chalegi" (Government will not run using power of the police) trooped into the Well demanding judicial probe.

"Hundreds of Congressmen including the UP PCC chief were injured in the lathicharge. We demand a judicial probe into the matter," CLP Leader Pradeep Mathur said.

Rejecting the charges, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mohd Azam Khan said, "All of you (legislators) participated in the agitation. No one is injured."

"You put innocent people forward and saved yourselves. Only those who engaged in hooliganism and resorted to brick batting might have been beaten up," Khan said.

Amid uproarious scenes, Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey adjourned the House for 10 minutes. He then extended the adjournment till 11.30 AM and then till 12.20 PM as a result of which the entire Question Hour got derailed.

When the House reassembled, obituary references were taken up and moments later Congress workers were back in the Well resuming their vociferous protest.
