UP Legislature remembers Mandela

Uttar Pradesh Legislature today paid tribute to former South African President Nelson Mandela with leaders remembering the anti-apartheid icon for his struggle against tyranny and injustice.

The members of both the Houses observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to the anti-apartheid icon, who passed away last week.

In the Assembly, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Opposition leaders -- Swami Prasad Maurya of BSP, Hukum Singh of BJP, Congress's Pramod Tewari, Dalbir Singh of RLD and Anupriya Patel of Apna Dal -- recalled the sacrifices of Nobel Peace Prize winner and his long struggle for ensuring the rights of the people of South Africa.
 

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Azam Khan and Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey, who had visited South Africa in the past, recalled their experience of seeing the prison where Mandela served a 27-year term.

Later, the House observed a two-minute silence in his memory and was adjourned for the day.

In the Vidhan Parishad, the Members recalled his services and observed a two-minute silence.
