Embarrassed by withdrawal of candidature by its nominees in Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections, the state BJP has formed a four-member committee to probe the issue.

"State BJP president Laxmi Kant Bajpai appointed ex-party state chief Surya Pratap Shahi, Ramapati Ram Tripathi, Shiv Pratap Shukla and Satish Mahana as inquiry officers," BJP spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said today.

He said the committee will look into selection, nomination and withdrawal of candidature and is expected to submit its report by March 6.

The BJP candidate from Lucknow-Unnao local bodies constituency, Aniruddh Singh Chandel, had withdrawn his nomination on February 18.

This led to unopposed election of Samajwadi Party's Sunil Singh Sajan, who is considered close to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

The party had later expelled Chandel on the grounds of indiscipline.
