Barring minor incidents, the last phase of Uttar Pradesh gram panchayat polls today passed off peacefully.

State Election Commission sources said the polling for the last and fifth phase registered a moderate voter turnout.

"Barring stray incidents, the last leg of polling for gram panchayats passed off peacefully in eight districts," IG (law and order) A Satish Ganesh told reporters here.

He said directives have been issued from DGP office that counting should be transparent.

The IG said that counting would be held on December 13 during which one section of PAC and civil police would be deployed at every center.

In addition to this, 22 companies of PAC would be made available at zonal and range level.

In Gonda, around 15 people looted two ballot boxes in Begumganj area, but they were recovered safely, District Magistrate Ajay Kumar Upadhyaya said.

He said that repolling would be held there tomorrow, adding that six persons have been detained in this connection.

Four persons were killed and many others injured in the last four phases of gram panchayat polling.
