Uttar Pradesh police have plans to recruit around 40,000 more constables in the near future, along with 5,000 Sub Inspectors, a senior official said today.

Announcing the plans, IG (Meerut zone), Bhavesh Kumar said that, "despite being a big force, we are not able to fully meet the expectations of the public". Hence the proposal to induct more personnel.

Kumar was speaking at the inaugural session of a two-day workshop on 'Responsibility of Police Department in Changing Environment and Expectations of Society'.

Kumar also exhorted police personnel to hone their computer skills as computer proficiency is set to be a thrust area once a system is launched to computerise the working of the force.

Over 550 police personnel are attending the workshop.
