UP riots: Ex-minister sent to 14 days' judicial custody

Former Uttar Pradesh minister Swami Omvesh was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days today after he failed to submit a bail bond in a case related to the Muzaffarnagar riots.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Sunder Lal granted bail to Omvesh but he failed to submit the bail bond. Following this the judge remanded him to judicial custody till October 9.

The former minister, who was arrested from Bijnore on September 23, is accused of holding a 'panchayat' without permission from the district administration in Nangla Mandore area before the riots.

Omvesh was among 16 politicians and community leaders who had been issued arrest warrants on September 18 for allegedly violating prohibitory orders and provoking communal tension in different meetings in Muzaffarnagar district.
 

The communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas have claimed 49 lives and displaced over 40,000 people.
