Uttar Pradesh government today decided to distribute menstrual sanitary napkins free of cost to girls studying in government schools at a cost of Rs 19.74 crores to state exchequer.
The decision in this regard was taken at cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.
"The government will distribute sanitary napkins free of cost to girl students studying in government schools from class six to class 12," a senior official said here.

He said that Rs 19.74 crore for the scheme would be borne by the state government through its own resources.
About the objective, he said that it would help in checking drop-out rate and increase confidence of girls.
The cabinet also approved a plan for the purchase, implementation and monitoring of the scheme.
