"The country has seen the highest rise in the prices of essential goods during this UPA government's tenure," Karat said at a public meeting here in North 24 Parganas district.
"The UPA government at the Centre is the most corrupt government since Independence," he alleged, referring to several scams that have surfaced during the UPA regime's tenure.
"The Left parties will meet in New Delhi on May 23 to chalk out country-wide protests against these," he said.
Karat also took on the Trinamool Congress-led government in West Bengal alleging that in the last one year of its governance, it has not been able to do anything positive for the people of the state.
"In the last one year, 53 farmers have committed suicide in West Bengal. But during the Left Front's 34-year-rule, no such incident had taken place in the state," he claimed.
Alleging that democratic rights of the people were being taken away, the CPI(M) leader claimed that 63 CPI(M) workers had been killed in the last one year, since the new dispensation took over.
