"UPA lacks political will and social commitment to bring a comprehensive and universal food security Bill. The Bill which was tabled in Parliament or the reported "Plan-B" proposal cannot ensure access and availability of food to the people," NFIW General Secretary Annie Raja said here.
She said there were shocking levels of hunger and malnutrition among women and children in the country and there was a need for "militant struggle for food security and on violence against women."
At the recently concluded All India Conference in Chennai in which over 700 delegates from 26 states participated, the NFIW has decided to intensify its campaign on food security and violence against women.
"And as part of this, it has been decided that September 18, which is the World Food Day, will be observed as a demand day. On this day, NFIW would stage dharnas and picketings of central government offices with the slogan 'Food must be our fundamental right and it has to be guaranteed'," Raja said.
The Federation also expressed concern over the increasing violence against women in the country.
Elaborating on the issue NFIW president Aruna Roy said, "We need to focus on the systematic rise in violence against women, including molestation, rape, witch hunt, moral policing and a whole range of structural social and economic oppression." MORE
