The neo-liberal policies pursued by the UPA government was responsible for the present economic crisis in the country, senior CPI leader A B Bardhan today claimed here today.

"Indian economy is going through a grave crisis. The rupee has plummeted to a new low in comparison to dollar. The sensex is also going down. This has happened due to the neo-liberal policies pursued by the UPA government," said Bardhan.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia have "blindly" followed neo-liberal policies, Bardhan said.

"They have allowed FDI in retail without any safeguard. They feel foreign capital can only help out our economy, but we don't agree with it," said the CPI leader.

"We are not against foreign capital, but we feel that it should come to India on the terms of national interest," he said.

Bardhan said several amendments were needed in the Food Security Bill, so that the poorest of the poor could benefit from it.

"More people needed to be covered under this ambit. They are saying that 25 kg of food grains would be given to each family. We are saying that it needs to be increased to 35 kg per family. Apart from the public distribution system," he added.
