A 17-year-old girl has allegedly committed suicide by setting herself afire apparently over being repeatedly harassed by a youth in Anta village in neighbouring Kanpur Dehat district, police said today.
The incident took place last night when alone in her house, the girl, upset over being harassed, shut herself in a room and set herself ablaze.
On seeing the flames, some neighbours entered her house after breaking the door but by then she had succumbed to her burn injuries, police said.
The victim's father in a complaint has alleged that, her daughter, who was a class 12 student, used to be upset as one Deepu (22), belonging to same village, harassed his daughter frequently. Yesterday evening also he had troubled her, they added.
On the basis of the complaint, an FIR has been registered in this connection, Station Officer of Rasoolabad police station, Jitendra Yadav said.
The body has been sent for postmortem, he said, adding, search is on to nab Deepu, who is on the run.
