A class 10 student allegedly committed suicide in Kolkata's Regent Park area after her mother scolded her for spending more time with her mobile phone than on studies ahead of board exams, police said on Tuesday.

Dolon Das, a class 10 student of a city school, was to appear for the Madhyamik examination in February. She was found hanging with a dupatta from the ceiling of a room in her house in Regent Park's Anandapally area on Monday evening, they said.

Dolon had a fight with her mother who scolded her for not studying and being busy with her mobile phone, they said.

The phone got damaged after her mother tried to snatch it from her and it fell. Following that, she locked herself inside a room, a senior officer of the Kolkata Police said.

"After repeated banging, when Dolon did not open the door, her mother informed youths of a local club who had to break-in and found her hanging from the ceiling," the officer said.

Locals rushed her to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead, he said, adding that the hospital authorities then informed police.

Officials said further investigations are underway.
