Uptick in demand lifts sugar futures by 0.49%

Sugar prices were higher by 0.49 per cent to Rs 3,493 per quintal in futures trading today as participants enlarged positions, supported by pick up in demand in the spot market.

At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, sugar for delivery in May month contracts rose by Rs 17, or 0.49 per cent to Rs 3,493 per quintal with an open interest of 1,32,300 lots.

On similar lines, the sweetener for delivery in July contracts gained Rs 16, or 0.44 per cent to Rs 3,628 per quintal in 22,910 lots.

Analysts said traders enlarged positions on the back of rising demand from retailers as well as bulk consumers in the spot market, restricted supplies mainly kept sugar prices higher at futures trade.
