At a function held in the US Embassy here, Bodde congratulated Basnet and the entire organisation of the Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) for winning the award and praised their work providing services and shelter to children whose parents are in prison.
Basnet, 29, started a home in Kathmandu where children can receive education, food, medical care and a chance to live a more normal life.
Bodde said that the award is a testament to Basnet's remarkable achievement, but it is also a call to action to the rest of the world that children should not be penalised for the crimes of their parents.
Bodde and Basnet welcomed Nepal government's commitment to protect the rights of children and expressed their hope that the authorities would move quickly and vigorously to ensure that no child lives behind prison bars.
