The government today told a special court that a formal extradition request from Indonesia against a fugitive US citizen, accused of causing death of a person due to medical negligence last year, is awaited.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Gurmohina Kaur, who presides over the Special Extradition Court of India, extended the judicial custody of Randall John Cafferty till October 17.

Cafferty was arrested from Bengaluru Airport on September 29 following a Red Corner Notice.

The accused is facing extradition proceedings in the court here which is waiting for a formal extradition request to be forwarded by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Advocate N K Matta, appearing for the MEA, told the court that Indonesia has sent a request for his provisional arrest as he was wanted there to face trial.

He also told the court that the formal request for extradition of the 56-year-old Cafferty was awaited but likely soon.

Cafferty was accused of committing various offences in Indonesia, including practising as a health worker without having an appropriate licence and causing medical negligence which resulted in the death of the patient.

Indian and Indonesia have an Extradition Treaty in place since 2011.
