US GM Gareyev is top seed for Chennai Open Chess tourney

Grand Master Timur Gareyev of USA heads a strong field in the 10th Chennai Open International Grandmaster Chess Tournament 2018, which begins here on January 18.

Gareyev, with an ELO rating of 2605, is the Guinness record holder for the World Blindfold simul chess.

Grand Master Ivan Rozum of Russia, ELO 2595 is the second seed, while experienced GM Sergei Tiviakov of The Netherlands (ELO rating 2584) is the third seed, said a press note.

Tiviakov had won the open title in the Commonwealth Chess Championships held here in 2012.

The tournament, organised by Tamil Nadu State Chess Association, carries a total prize money of Rs 11 lakh with the winner set to receive Rs two lakh.
 

A total of 43 foreign players,including 16 Grand Masters, 17 International Masters have confirmed their participation so far, the release added.
