Covidien, the over USD 10-billion global healthcare products company, today officially opened its first training and education centre in the city.
The Covidien Centre of Innovation India (CCI India), located at the northern suburb of Andheri, will offer clinicians training on advanced procedures and techniques using leading equipment and technology.
"Expanding our training and education capabilities worldwide is a key component of Covidien's global growth strategy and the Mumbai centre will play an integral role as we continue to focus on important emerging geographies," Covidien president for emerging markets Brian D King said.
Covidien develops, manufactures and sells a diverse range of medical device and supply products. With 2013 revenue of USD 10.2 billion, Covidien has over 38,000 employees worldwide in more than 70 countries, and its products are sold in over 150 countries.
The Mumbai centre will focus on raising awareness about various diseases and provide opportunities for clinicians to see how Covidien's devices can help healthcare professionals treat better.
Covidien India Subcontinent managing director Mark Rooney said: "Chronic diseases contribute to over half of deaths in the country. Cardiovascular disease, dyslipidemia and many types of cancers are highly prevalent in urban and rural areas alike. Many of these diseases, although common, are inadequately diagnosed and treated.
"At CCI India, we will focus on innovative procedures and disease management that address many of India's most challenging disease states."
The CCI India is Covidien's third training centre in an emerging market, with other centres located in Shanghai, China, and Osong in South Korea. The company plans to open additional centres this year in Istanbul in Turkey, and Sao Paulo in Brazil shortly, King said.
Covidien has a growing presence in the country with offices in Gurgaon, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad, employing over 400 persons. In 2012, Covidien opened an R&D center in Hyderabad.
