"In the US, there are 63,000 practising physicians of Indian origin and some of them would like to provide their expertise to help augment medical education and health-care in India," co-founder of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin Dr Navin Shah told PTI.
Similarly, some of the 70,000 specialists in India would like to visit the US to get acquainted with its medical education system, medical practise and research, he said.
"This voluntary, mutually agreed upon reciprocal exchange will feature a web-based matching by speciality, done by the American Professional Exchange Association," Shah said.
Such exchanges will create multiple joint projects benefiting both US and India, he said. The initiative is also supported by the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin.
Lauding the initiative of helping Indians achieve greater access to health-care while at the same time fostering exchanges of Indian physicians and American physicians of Indian origin, Amy Hariani, Director, Life Sciences and Legal Policy Council of USIBC, said theses exchanges promote collaboration and learning and are a significant step forward for India's health-care system.
USIBC supports the Indian Physician Exchange Program, she said, in a letter to Shah.
"USIBC is the premier business advocacy organisation representing America's top companies investing in India, joined by global Indian companies, with an aim to deepen trade and strengthen commercial ties. We have over 350 member companies committed to the India Story," the letter said.
"The continued exchange of Indian physicians and American physicians of Indian origin will promote health and understanding of new treatments and cures," it said.
