The US today said it was closely monitoring the "situation" in Korean Peninsula following reports that North Korea launched a ballistic missile and asked it to "refrain" from actions that could further escalate tensions in the region.

"We have seen reports that North Korea launched a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan. We are closely monitoring the situation on the Korean Peninsula," State Department Spokesman John Kirby said yesterday.

"We call again on North Korea to refrain from actions that further raise tensions in the region and focus instead on taking concrete steps toward fulfilling its international commitments and obligations," he said.

"The United States remains steadfast in its commitments to the defence of its allies, including the Republic of Korea and Japan. We will continue to coordinate closely with our allies and partners in the region," Kirby said.
