House Democrats and Republicans are pressing US President Barack Obama to withdraw his nominee for US ambassador to Norway.

In a letter last week and a statement today, lawmakers called George Tsunis unqualified for the post. They cited his ill-informed comments at his Senate confirmation hearing in January and his lack of understanding about Norway.

The lawmakers, led by Republican Tom Marino, said that in light of Russia's aggression, it was critical for the United States to have a knowledgeable and respected ambassador in Norway.

Tsunis, who is from New York, is the chairman of Chartwell Hotels and a Democratic fundraiser. Minnesota's two Democratic senators, Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar have said they oppose the nominee.
