A 24-year-old woman in the US who decided to surprise her boyfriend on a hunting trip was accidentally shot in the leg after the man mistook her for a deer.

Matthew Tyler Webb, 23, from Georgia, was arrested after he fired his gun Thursday night into a wooded area, striking his girlfriend Audrey Mayo.

The couple were on the roof of Webb's home when he saw a pack of deer travelling through the woods and decided to hunt them.

At first, Mayo said she wanted to stay back but later decided to join him, according to the 'Times Free Press'.

Webb heard a noise in the woods and fired his rifle. When he heard Mayo scream he rushed over and tried to wrap his jacket around her wounded leg.

Mayo passed out at the scene and was taken to a local hospital where she is listed in critical but stable condition, the 'New York Daily News' reported.

Webb is charged with discharging a firearm within 150 feet of a roadway. Officials with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, which is handling the investigation, said more charges may follow next week.
