Thomas Daigle of Milford delivered a pair of boxes to the steps of Milford Federal Savings and Loan Association this April that contained more than 62,000 pennies.
"It started out as a joke," Daigle said.
"I said I'm going to pay the last mortgage payment off on this place in pennies."
In 1977, he and his wife Sandra married and moved into their current Milford home.
After he purchased the home in 1977 with a mortgage from Milford Federal, Daigle made it his mission to make the final payment in pennies, The Milford Daily News reported.
He said that he just wanted to make his last payment "memorable".
Daigle says he was looking for a hobby during long rainy and snowy afternoons in Milford. So he started counting his change and rolling his pennies.

The mortgage payment came on April 24, the same day that he and his wife celebrated their 35th anniversary, a date he said was just a coincidence.
The couple walked into the bank and paid off their mortgage with over 800 pounds (360 kilogrammes) of pennies.
About a month before Daigle delivered the pennies, he gave Milford National a heads up.
"They were 100 percent for it," he said.
Daigle is happy he no longer has the change in his house.
