The US today refused to lend its support to talks between the Pakistan government and the Taliban, describing it as an internal matter of the country.

"We of course are closely following the recent developments and reports. The issue of whether to negotiate with TTP (Tehrek-e-Taliban Pakistan) is an internal matter for Pakistan," State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters.

The US and Pakistan continue to have a vital shared strategic interest in ending extremist violence so as to build a more prosperous, stable and peaceful region, she said.

When asked why the US view on the Pak-Taliban talks is quite different from that on the Afghan-Taliban talks, Psaki said, "Every circumstance is different. I'm not piling ever country and every circumstance into one. So I think I gave an answer on our position.
