A Sri Lankan government minister today hailed the US and North Korean leaders' summit in Singapore as an "example" to the world.
"Despite all foul talks world shall salute both #trump & #kim for setting an example for talking over warring," tweeted Mano Ganesan, a minority Tamil leader and minister of national integration and languages, as he praised US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un for engaging in negotiations.
Trump and Kim today met for an unprecedented summit aimed at normalising bilateral ties and complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.
Sri Lanka has condemned North Korea's nuclear tests and earlier this year urged Pyongyang to fully implement a UN Security Council resolution on the issue.
Sri Lanka and North Korea have no resident diplomatic missions. The North Korean embassy here was shut down in 1971 following suspicions of alleged support extended to the Marxist JVP rebellion in April that year.
