The United States and Russia are working to get high-level diplomatic talks back on track that were canceled after the US imposed new sanctions on Moscow. Undersecretary of State Thomas Shannon met today with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in Washington.

The State Department says they discussed President Donald Trump's planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week in Germany.

The State Department says they also "discussed scheduling a new meeting" between Shannon and Russia's deputy foreign minister, Sergey Ryabkov. That channel of communication had been set up to address irritants in the US-Russia relationship and restore trust. But last month, Moscow called off the second meeting in protest of new sanctions over Russia's actions in Ukraine.

It's still unclear if and when a new Shannon-Ryabkov meeting will take place.
