"We share a common interest with Pakistan when it comes to going after al-Qaeda and then seeing a stable Pakistan emerge in the region," State department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters at his daily news conference.
"As we've said many times, Pakistan faces a strong core threat from these extremist groups, and we're committed to cooperating with them on counterterrorism," he said.
However, Toner did not respond to questions on the latest drone strikes in the country by the United States.
The US, he said, continues to hold talks with Pakistan on reopening of the NATO supply routes to Afghanistan, which were closed last November after a cross border air strike that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.
