North Western Railways (NWR) has become a profit-making entity through efficient use of information technology and strengthening of infrastructure, NWR General Manager said today.

"We made efficient use of IT to improve efficiency and transparency, introduced E-Daak system replacing manual Daak transfer system, which is now being followed by other zones, and worked on strengthening infrastructure in order to make NWR profit making," GM R C Agrawal told reporters here.

He said the work of building gates on unmanned railway crossings was taking place on a warfooting.

"Unmanned crossing is the main cause of accidents. 84 per cent of the total 33 accidents that occurred in 2012-13 in NWR were caused due to unmanned crossings," he said.

During the last four years, the NWR has improved signaling system, achieved 97 per cent punctuality and improved revenue generation, he said.

"The earning of NWR which was Rs 1,840 crore in 2005-06 increased to Rs 5,807 crore in 2013-14," he said.

He said of the 31 stations selected for development as 'Adarsh stations', work on 26 stations has already been completed.

"NWR has focused on service delivery and improving facilities for passengers," he added.
