An under-trial prisoner (UTP) while undergoing treatment escaped from the SCB medical college and hospital here today giving a slip to jail security staff.

At least three UTPs have run away from the hospital in the last one year questioning the security measures adopted by the jail staff.

Choudwar jail officials said one Pramod Mohanty (45) of Bidanasi area in the city was arrested last year on a murder charge.

Pramod was admitted in the TB ward of the hospital on June 8 and he was to be discharged on the day, a jail staff said after filing an FIR in the hospital outpost here today.

"The UTP went to the ward toilet locking its main door from inside. When he did not return after a long time, we broke open the door and found he had escaped by breaking the toilet window" said jail warder R K Rath in his FIR.

Two other UTPs had escaped from the hospital while undergoing treatment here in June last year and February this year. One Pritam Bose, arrested for dacoity had escaped from custody allegedly by throwing chilly powder in the eyes of one of the jail guards on June 20, 2015.
