MDMK General Secretary Vaiko today met CPI(M) Veteran and Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly V S Achuthanandan to seek his support against the Centre's proposed India-based Nutrino Research Centre in Tamil Nadu's Theni District, bordering the state.

Vaiko who has already filed a PIL in Madras High Court against the multi-crore project raising safety concerns about dams in the region, said there was need to put pressure on the Union Government not to proceed with the proposal.

Achuthanandan later told reporters that he had promised his support for the cause.

Tamil Nadu and Kerala should together fight against the proposal, he said.

Vaiko said the Centre could pose a threat to the Idukki and Mullaiperiyar dams in Kerala and various irrigation projects involving cardamom estates.

He had recently met Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on the issue.
